Illness and Injury Education
The Certified Child Life Specialists at Lighthouse Counsel Center are the only Registered Wonders & Worries Providers in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
We are available and offer professional support for children and teenagers through a parent or sibling’s serious illness.
The focus of the interventions are on illness education, family communication and coping skill development. As Registered Wonders & Worries Providers, we use the Wonders & Worries curriculum. This model of support is the only formal curriculum-based intervention that has been validated by a randomized clinical trial. Families who receive this support have consistently reported increased communication regarding the illness, decreased parenting stress, and decreased anxious or nervous feelings for children and teens.
This is a brief outline of our standard illness education program:
Free 30-minute consultation call with parent(s) or primary caregiver(s)
One-hour Intake session with parents or primary caregiver(s)
Six in-person or virtual sessions with child(ren) or teenager(s) using the Wonders & Worries curriculum
One free parent check-in session with additional sessions as needed
Ongoing follow-up with family
“Check-ins” with child(ren) and teen(s) as needed throughout illness & treatment
Anticipatory grief support, if needed
Two hours of complimentary funeral preparation and support, if needed
Some important notes:
Families experiencing advanced stages of illness may benefit from additional sessions
After completing the curriculum, many families choose to continue monthly or bimonthly sessions for ongoing support
Many families transition to grief counseling when needed
